The Problem
Dogs pulling on the lead is a very common problem and has probably affected most dog owners, often causing great distress and sometimes even physical injury.
Fortunately with the right training and products this can be easily resolved.
The Solution
- Only Move Forward On A Loose Lead
You need to teach your dog that he can only move forward on a loose lead. If the lead is very short and tight, your dog will just be stimulated to pull even more.
- Reduce Pre-walk Excitement
If your dog is excited he is more likely to pull, so it is best to refrain from building pre-walk anticipation, such as saying 'walkies' or shaking the lead.
- Consider Your Dog's Safety
Before concentrating on stopping the pulling, it is worth considering your dog's safety. Dogs who pull on the lead often have sensitive throat and neck areas from excessive pulling, and to avoid injury, a harness can be used to take away the pressure from the front.
However, only specific anti-pull harnesses will stop your dog pulling on the lead.
An alternative to a full body harness is the Halti Headcollar which leads the dog by the head in a similar way to how horses are guided. It has a very high success rate.
- Clicker Training
Clicker training can be a very effective method of teaching your dog to stop pulling.
- For The More Stubborn Dogs...
Sometimes particularly determined dogs need something extra to teach them to walk to heel. Training aids which distract, such as the Masterplus Pro Remote Training Collar and the Pet Corrector, can be very effective in these cases.
