Chewing & Stealing

The Problem

Dogs chewing is a problem which can range from just plain annoying to instances which are life threatening. Dogs often chew household items, such as furniture, personal things like shoes and sometimes plants, but it is also not uncommon for dogs to chew electrical cables which is of course most undesirable.

The Solution

  • Remove boredom
Dogs often resort to chewing becasue they are bored or under-stimulated.

To overcome this you can provide your dog with lots of stimulating toys and chews. This means that the chewing can be focused in a more appropriate manner.

  • Provide more mental stimulation
It is also a good idea to provide more mental stimulation for your dog. This can be achieved by going to training classes or by clicker training.
  • Keep your dog active
An active dog is more often than not a happy dog, and lots of walks with interesting smells, sounds and sights can certainly go a long way to achieving this. Also, when you get home, your dog is likely to be relaxed and content (if not exhausted!) and shouldn't have to resort to chewing to relieve boredom.
  • Use distraction
Stealing often accompanies chewing because your dog is likely to steal something (in the nicest possible way!) first before he chews it. If you can catch him in the act, a well timed spray from a distraction device like the Masterplus Pro Remote Training Collar or the Pet Corrector can be used to very good effect.
