The Problem
Barking dogs can be a major problem for many people - owners, neighbours and people just going about their daily activities - and it can lead to prosecution, even resulting in your dog being taken away from you.
The Solution
Dogs often bark because they are excited, are seeking attention or are stressed at being left alone. With this in mind, it is much easier to find ways of solving the problem.
- Don't shout
Don't shout - this will make your dog think that you are joining and he will just continue with the barking
- Use distraction
Use something which interrupts your dog and distracts him from the barking e.g. Anti-Bark Collar or Pet Corrector
- Try not to respond
Try not to respond when your dog barks - this will only make him think that he is getting attention
- Use rewards
Reward your dog when he is quiet
- Desensitise
If your dog always barks at a particular thing, it can often be good to expose him to that thing to a lesser degree but frequently so that he becomes used to it and even disinterested in it.
